Roundabout on Eastgate Drive Named After Former City Council Member Richard (Dick) Smith

Tuesday, April 23, 2019

At the regular meeting held on April 22, 2019, the Aiken City Council adopted a resolution that the roundabout on Eastgate Drive, just off Whiskey Road, shall hence be known as the “Richard W. Smith Memorial Roundabout.”

Dick Smith served the citizens of the City of Aiken for eight years as a City Council member from November 2001 to November 2009, representing District 4, and served as Mayor Pro Tem from 2006 to 2007. During his years of service, Dick Smith exemplified the characteristics important for a public servant – commitment, integrity, loyalty. Under his leadership, the City of Aiken managed its growth and continued to be a city emphasizing history, art, and culture, and introduced modern day traffic solutions.

The resolution was presented to the Smith family at the City Council meeting. Smith, at the age of 90, passed away on March 23, 2019.
