Downtown Aiken Adds Additional Automatic External Defibrillators

Thursday, November 7, 2019

Two more Automatic External Defibrillators (AED), a device that restores the regular heart rhythm to victims of cardiac arrest, have been installed in downtown Aiken. On October 21, 2019, AEDs were placed in the Alley behind the Municipal Building and at the AECOM Center For Performing Arts on Newberry Street through a partnership with the Rotary Club of Aiken.

The Rotary Club of Aiken performed a community need assessment for these devices around the city and placed them according to the density and age demographics of residents and visitors in the selected areas.

“Rotary’s motto is “service above self” and we’re pleased to provide these two AEDs along with the previous twelve located in public buildings in Aiken. We hope they’ll add an additional margin of safety for the citizens of our community.” said John Lindsey, President of the Rotary Club of Aiken

The survival rate with bystander CPR, but no automated external defibrillator (AED), before emergency medical responders arrive is at a very low percentage. Survival rates with bystander CPR and coupled with an AED increases the survival rate significantly.

Though AEDS are carried by first responders, The Rotary Club of Aiken and the City recognizes that every second counts and the defibrillators could provide a life-saving moment to someone in cardiac arrest.

“The City of Aiken is proud to partner with the Rotary Club of Aiken to place these AEDs in the AECOM Theater and in The Alley. It is through partnerships such as these that makes our community one of the best small cities anywhere,” stated Mayor Rick Osbon

The Rotary Club of Aiken community needs assessment identified 12 locations in Aiken county, and the City of Aiken now has four including the initial ones that were placed inside the Municipal Building and Odell Weeks Activity Center.
