The City of Aiken Achieves Recognition For Historic Preservation

Thursday, June 10, 2021

The City of Aiken has maintained the celebrated distinction of being a Certified Local Government (CLG) since 1993 and is one of 36 local governments in South Carolina to achieve this honor. The program recognizes the historic preservation initiatives that Aiken has in place and establishes a partnership for preservation among the local government, the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) at the SC Department of Archives and History, and the National Park Service.

Through the certification process, Aiken has demonstrated a commitment to historic preservation, which is key to the City’s ability to preserve, protect, and increase awareness of our unique cultural heritage.

SHPO periodically conducts evaluations to ensure that Aiken continues to meet the basic requirements of the certification agreement. These are:

  • To enforce legislation for the designation and protection of historic properties.
  • Have an adequate and qualified local design review commission.
  • Maintain a local inventory of historic properties.
  • Provide for public participation in the local historic preservation program, including the National Register nomination process.
  • Carry out the intent of the National Historic Preservation Act in their community.

The City of Aiken is proud to report that they have received another satisfactory evaluation.

“Aiken has always held maintaining its historic charm as the highest of priorities. This recognition shows our efforts in that regard,” stated Mayor Rick Osbon.

The current evaluation covers federal fiscal years FY 16-17 to FY 19-20. The SHPO bases the evaluation on the Annual Reports that the City has submitted, performance on SHPO-administered grants, and observations of SHPO staff who may have worked with the City on other projects.
